150 mets

What can you buy for 150 mets?
Approx. $ 5,50 or € 4,30

4 kg green beans
on special, normally close to double the price
on the street,
people come to your car and try to sell their products
around lunch time,
good time to buy, the guy wanted some money

I blanched the whole lot
Now I only have to get a packed from the freezer

1 tray of eggs (30)
Here they say: um favo
Fresh eggs from
Ovos para Africa / Eggs for Africa
Just outside town

Eggs
Is booming business
The eggs used to come from Malawi
(neighbouring country)
On a truck
Took days
In the sun
No refrigerators
~
And now
Fresh eggs
Really fresh

MUCH better

10 rolls of toiletpaper
They used to be called
White gold

Missionary friends told us
That
Years ago

You would give a roll of toilet paper
In stead of a bottle of wine J

10 rolls for 150 mets

They used to be around the 250 mets
Imagine close to 10 dollars or 8 euro for a pack of ten…

Maybe strange for you
But 8 years ago
It was very difficult to find
Disposable nappies here
Or butter
Or cream
Or peanut butter
Or milk

you can always get
vegetables
fruit
what´s in season

In the 3+ years
That we are here
We have also noticed
Big changes
more shops
more (western)products

Recently a new supermarket opened up
…..
Talk of the town

mets is short for metecais
27 metecais is approx $1
